About Skardu

Skardu is the capital of Baltistan and serves as the gateway to some of the highest mountains in the world, including K2, the second tallest peak on Earth. Located at the confluence of the Indus and Shigar Rivers, Skardu offers a dramatic landscape of turquoise lakes, vast plateaus, ancient forts, and cold deserts. The town itself sits at 2,228 meters elevation and is surrounded by towering peaks on all sides. Skardu is the launching point for treks to K2, Broad Peak, and the Baltoro Glacier, making it a destination that attracts mountaineers from across the globe. For regular tourists, the stunning Shangrila Resort, crystal clear Upper Kachura Lake, the expansive Deosai National Park, and the beautifully restored Shigar Fort provide unforgettable experiences.

Best Time to Visit

May to September is the best period. June to August provides the warmest weather and full access to Deosai (which opens in late June). Spring and autumn offer fewer crowds. Winter sees heavy snowfall with limited access.

How to Reach Skardu

Skardu is reachable by road from Islamabad via the Karakoram Highway (18 to 22 hours). PIA operates flights from Islamabad to Skardu Airport (1 hour, weather dependent). Our packages offer both road and air travel options.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Altitude is 2,228m in town, rising to 4,114m at Deosai
  • Flights are frequently cancelled due to weather; plan buffer days
  • Carry warm clothing as temperatures drop significantly at night
  • ATMs are available but carry cash as backup
  • Deosai road opens typically in late June and closes by October
